Raider Band info for December!

After-school rehearsals :
Wind Ensemble : Wednesday Dec 7 6:00-8:00 AND Monday Dec 12 2:20-3:20.
Concert Band : Thursday Dec 8 2:20-3:50 AND Tuesday Dec 13 2:20-3:20.

Jazz Band: Dec 5 2:20-3:50.

~Reminder: these rehearsals are required and are a part of the grade for each class.

Performances:
Winter Concert I: The Wind Ensemble will perform on this concert, Tuesday December 13, 7:30, in the SHS auditorium, along with other Stuart ensembles. Call Time is 6:30.

Winter Concert II: The Concert Band and the Jazz Band will both perform on this concert, Wednesday December 14, 7:30, in the SHS auditorium, along with other Stuart ensembles. Call time is 6:00 for Jazz Band, 6:30 for Concert Band.
~for whichever of these two concerts you/your child is performing on, please bring a 2-liter bottle of soda and some cookies with you!

Spring Trip: Second payment of $150 is due December 11! (Okay, that's a Sunday. We just wanted the due date to be on the 11^th of each month. The world won't stop rotating if your payment comes in on the 12^th.)
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me. If you are interested in being a chaperone on the trip, please let us know ASAP!!

All-District Band Auditions are Saturday December 10 at West Potomac HS. Those auditioning - you will have receive your audition time and other important information via email veryvery soon, NLT Monday. Practice hard, and good luck! Welcome to the new raiderband.org!

Welcome to the new raiderband.org! I'm still tweaking around the edges, but I'm hopeful that this new layout (which is a whole lot easier to update) will be an improvement. Hopefully things are clear and self-explanatory. If you run into any problems while looking around, or have ideas about what else should be here, let me know!

About Us

The bands

Located in Fairfax County, Virginia, J.E.B. Stuart High School is proud to have a thriving band program. The Stuart Bands are committed to excellence at all levels, and are grounded in a belief that high-quality musical performances are a product of a much more important process. Making music can be a uniquely powerful experience, one that provides students with as a variety of skills and experiences that will serve them for the rest of their lives. The program consists of two concert bands, a jazz band, a percussion ensemble, and the Marching Raiders.

The Stuart Bands are flourishing, being named a “Virginia Honor Band” for six of the last eight years (2004, 2006 - 2009, 2011). The Marching Raiders have nearly doubled in size in recent years, while still earning consistent “Superior” ratings from judges and winning their class at recognized competitions, including the prestigious JMU Parade of Champions. The Wind Ensemble has received ratings of "Superior" fromevery judge at the District X Band Festival for the last SIX years. The Stuart bands commissioned and gave the world premiere performance of "Aurora Awakes" by John Mackey on May 8, 2009. In 2010, the bands were a part of the consortium which commissioned the band version of "The Seal Lullaby" by Eric Whitacre; made demonstration recordings for an independent publisher of band music; and appeared in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, DC.

The director

Doug Martin is in his ninth year as Director of Bands at J.E.B. Stuart High School. In this position, he teaches the Wind Ensemble, Concert Band, Marching Band, Jazz Band and Percussion Ensemble, as well as the International Baccalaureate (“IB”) Music class. He has also served as chair of the Performing Arts Department, overseeing a department offering choir, orchestra, guitar and theatre courses. Prior to his appointment at Stuart, he held similar positions at Mount Vernon and Annandale High Schools.

He has served as the representative for District X to the Virginia Band & Orchestra Directors Association as well as the chair for District X to the Virginia Music Educators Association, and is a Logistical Coordinator for their annual conference. He has served as an adjudicator and a clinician for concert, jazz, and marching band events. He is part of the writing team for the revision of the Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) Music Program of Studies, and he served on the FCPS Music Curriculum Advisory Committee for many years. In November 2008, he became the first high school band director in FCPS, and one of only two in the state of Virginia, to be named a National Board Certified Teacher. He is also an appointed member of the Center for Teacher Leadership at Virginia Commonwealth University.

He received his Bachelor’s in Music Education magna cum laude from Florida State University, and his Master’s in Music Education with a focus in Instrumental Conducting from George Mason University, where he graduated with the Distinguished Graduate Student award from the Department of Music. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia, with his wife Jackie, their 2-year-old daughter Josie, and their very old pug Coffee.
